You hear about it all the time, but what exactly is ‘the cloud?’ A shorthand name for ‘cloud computing services,’ the cloud is essentially a collection of servers that host software and computing infrastructure.
For example, when you upload a file or photo to the cloud, like Apple iCloud, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive, that document is not stored locally in one place, like a computer or smartphone. Instead, it’s stored on multiple internet-connected servers. This creates an online backup of the file that can be accessed from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.
