You've likely seen a TV ad or heard someone mention a VPN recently, but just what is it? VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and it is essentially an online encryption tool that masks your identity and hides device IP addresses, providing greater privacy online.
Many folks use VPNs when accessing public WiFi hotspots, which are sometimes targeted by bad actors because of their relatively weak security. VPNs are also commonly used by businesses to access remote networks in other locations, allowing staff to safely share resources and information.
VPNs are generally available through paid software subscriptions, and they work on desktop and laptop computers, tablets, smartphones, and other devices.
