For decades, Canby locals could call 266.TIME and hear a short, automated message from Canby Telephone Association that relayed the current time and area temperature. People used this service to set clocks and to check the weather against the Portland newscasters. 266.TIME saw thousands upon thousands of calls per month in its peak. However, over the course of the pandemic and with the increasing prevalence of smartphones, the frequency of calls diminished dramatically. To add to the situation, the cost of equipment repair and maintenance did not make sense given the decline in usage. Carefully considering all of these factors, the company decided to retire this historic, nostalgic service in early March of 2022.
